Embracing a Decision for Opportunity in Life and Photography

By Hein Jonker

In our daily lives, procrastination often emerges as a silent thief, stealthily stealing moments that could have been spent on fruitful endeavours. This habit of delaying or postponing tasks is particularly detrimental when it comes to passions that require us to be proactive and engaged, such as photography. As someone who has faced the temptation to put off until tomorrow what could be done today, I’ve learned that the key to overcoming procrastination lies in the decision to simply “move.”

The Psychology of Procrastination

Procrastination isn’t just about laziness or poor time management; it’s deeply tied to our emotions. Fear of failure, a desire for perfection, or even the lack of the right mood can lead us to put off tasks. In the context of photography, this might mean waiting for the perfect lighting, the ideal subject, or even the “right” mood to venture out with a camera.

However, embracing a mindset of less thought more action can be transformative. When we decide to move, we step beyond our comfort zones, pushing against the inertia that holds us back. This decision not only propels us towards our goals but also shifts our mental state from one of hesitation to one of engagement.

Movement Creates Opportunities

Taking the initiative to go out and explore with a camera can lead to unexpected discoveries. On a recent beach excursion, despite initial doubts about finding a worthwhile subject, the decision to move and engage with my environment resulted in capturing unique photographic moments. This experience is a testament to the fact that opportunities often arise from the most unexpected places, provided we are there to seize them.

Movement isn’t just about physical action; it’s about a mindset that values spontaneity and openness to experience. In photography, saying “yes” more often than “no” can dramatically increase your chances of encountering the extraordinary. Each decision to act is a step away from the missed opportunities that haunt those who succumb to procrastination.

The Holistic Benefits of Embracing Movement

Engaging in photography and overcoming procrastination by choosing to move has benefits that extend beyond the camera lens. It is immensely beneficial for the mind, body, and soul. Physically, it encourages us to explore new environments, promoting both physical and mental health. Emotionally, it fulfils our creative instincts and provides a sense of accomplishment that combats the guilt often associated with procrastination.

Moreover, photography can be a meditative practice or an emotional outlet, allowing us to connect with our surroundings in a mindful way. This not only enhances our photographic skills but also enriches our personal lives by grounding us in the present moment.

Time to Move!

The decision to move and act against the urge to procrastinate is powerful. In the realm of photography, as in life, it opens doors to new possibilities and can transform seemingly mundane moments into opportunities for growth and fulfilment.

So, next time you find yourself hesitating or sucking up some excuse, remember that movement is not just a physical act but a declaration of intent against the stagnant forces of procrastination. Grab your camera, step out the door, and embrace the opportunities that await. Each shot taken is a victory over the procrastination that threatens to hold you back from living fully and creatively.

Happy shooting – your fellow ex-procrastinator!
